Halle Institute for Economic Research (IWH)

IWH_EN2The Halle Institute for Economic Research (IWH) Member of the Leibniz Association was founded in 1992. With its three research departments Macroeconomics, Financial Markets and Structural Change and Productivity the IWH conducts economic research and provides policy recommendations which are founded on evidence-based research. The roots of IWH lie in transition economics, in other words, in the analysis of the transition from a planned economy to a market economy in East Germany and in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. Since the transition of the formal institutions is complete, IWH has revised its research profile so that, under the guiding theme "From Transition to European Integration", the analysis of economic convergence processes and international integration are at the centre of its research. Economic convergence and growth processes depend on the efficiency of the allocation of production factors and advances in productivity. IWH examines, in particular, how the financial system is able to ensure capital (re)allocation, structural change, innovation, advances in productivity and, hence, an efficient and sustainable real economic development.
